“The Heights” is Washington Heights, specifically the intersection above the 181st Street station on Manhattan’s A train. “In The Heights” is the new Broadway musical set in this location. (Click the link to the official site and you can watch a video from the show). It opened Sunday night and was my first Broadway opening, an exciting adventure in itself. The show was fantastic.
DISCLAIMER: My boyfriend’s mom’s boyfriend is a producer (don’t try to wrap your head around that; I’m simply disclosing a potential conflict of interest… unlike my governor did by prosecuting prostitution rings while…ah, never mind…)
But you don’t have to take my word for it. Click to read Charles Isherwood’s review in the NY Times. “You’ll discover a singular new sensation, Lin-Manuel Miranda, commanding the spotlight as if he were born in the wings.” I agree. Miranda conceived of the idea and plays the starring role. He’s fantastic. No doubt he’s worked tirelessly on this show for many years but at the end, when the cast came on stage, he was so in awe of where he was, it was visible on his face to everyone in the house. Unlike many stars (and he is certainly a star now, a rising one), he didn’t come across as that spotlight were an entitlement. He considered it an honor and it was so refreshing to see that. Through hard work and luck, his dream has come true and it was so much fun to be a part of it and to see it happening on that stage. GO SEE “IN THE HEIGHTS!”
The other great part of the evening was that we got to meet and chat with Jonathan’s theater idol Stephen Schwartz. Here’s our picture taken with him at the post-show party at Chelsea Piers (Chelsea Piers ain’t what it used to be, from what I hear – now it’s pretty luxurious.) Schwartz wrote the music to “Wicked,” a show we’ve seen 17 times between the two of us (we like it a little bit). No doubt you’re familiar with some of his music and you can check out his website by clicking here.
